Or like they understand what they're doing. Your security team doesn't sound very competent. It also means that patches flow downstream from RARlabs.Īs for the rest, I can see why you have to remind yourself why you're working where you work. Meaning that if WinRAR is vulnerable, so is every goddamn thing else.

The ironic thing about this, IIRC, is that all apps that handle RAR files use the same library for that task.

Is this Caterpillar? Folks who work there tell me that if you get caught with unapproved software your boss gets an email about it.

Plus it's better than the alternatives: weak passwords or plaintext password storage. how TF else are we supposed to manage multiple secure passwords for various internal sites? Post-its? I have KeePass but I think any security team in their right mind overlooks it because at least it's open source and doesn't have a commercial license requirement. OMG! I WISH A MF WOULD ??? No but seriously though.

I popped up onto the radar once because apparently the server Peter Lowe's blocklist (used in uBlock Origin) was on a blacklist somewhere.Ħ months ago they went on a rampage to rip out Keepass

Now they're scanning for executables and whacking the entire directory the executable is in. Does an app that makes a fire phasers noise when you login to a server and an "uh-oh!" noise every time a download or upload completes have any business in an enterprise environment? Then they ripped out WinSCP and forced me to use WS_FTP Pro, another complete piece of crap app. They ripped 7-zip and WinRAR out of the environment and gave us all WINZIP. Well, a LOT of people had 7-zip installed and when that ACE vulnerability surfaced, they went apeshit and decided we're going to with ONE compression program. I had it vetted, had it packaged, and pushed it out to my whole team. I went through the effort 5 years ago to buy WinRAR. The most frustrating thing for me is that they replace really good software with crap. If I had to guess, some executive demanded admin access, installed something he/she shouldn't have and had "bad stuff" happen and now the whole place is over-reacting, because this is somehow IT's fault and not theirs.

If they uninstall something, and you reinstall it (meaning the exe pops on the next scan of your PC), someone will show up at your desk and physically take your PC for an "in person lookthrough" by the security team, and you will be written up. Now they're scanning for executables and whacking the entire directory the executable is in.Ħ months ago they went on a rampage to rip out Keepass. They used to just yank stuff based on what was in the Add/Remove Programs Database. Apparently all the 1st run does is uninstall the existing build

I've found it indispensable for Unix & Unix-like remote machine management from Windows. I use it for the same reasons everyone mentioned. Putty/WinSCP - you probably won't see any value - I'd hit the product page, look at the feature set, and see if there is actually anything that can help you or your business. Multi Exec, the file browser, pulling up an X window with say 'gkrellm&', easy export/import for sharing with co-workers, and apparently one of my co-workers really likes the web page export that they keep on their personal page :P Pro support is yearly - lifetime ownership/usage of the product however.Īs far as the tools/features - you can probably find better dedicated tools (even for free!) - but it's nice to have them all in one place. The value add is probably all the other forms of connectivity (RDP, VNC, S/FTP, etc) Been using it for a few years now - personally enjoy it compared to just Putty/WinSCP as most of the value is in the extra tools (if you use them).įor SSH - Looks like putty - because it is based on putty, it's written right on the front of the tin :)
